KS1 Phonics Screening - Week Commencing 6th June 2022
The phonics screening check is taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England, and is usually taken in June. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how a child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether a child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.
Year 1 children usually take the phonics screening check in early June. However, due to Covid-19 the check did not take place in June 2021. Instead, schools are required to use a past version of the check with Year 2 pupils in November or December 2021.
Key Stage 1 Assessments - Year 2 2022
The assessments can be taken any time during May and they are not strictly timed. Most pupils won’t know they are taking them as teachers will incorporate them into everyday classroom practice.

The purpose of the check is to determine whether pupils can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will also help the teachers to identify pupils who may need additional support.
The MTC is an on-screen check consisting of 25 times tables questions. Children will answer 3 practice questions before moving on to the official check, and will then have 6 seconds to answer each question. On average, the check should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.
