At Beaconside Primary and Nursery School, our maths curriculum is thoughtfully designed around the White Rose Maths scheme, which embodies a mastery approach that aligns closely with the National Curriculum’s aims to develop fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. This approach breaks down mathematical concepts into small, manageable steps, enabling pupils to build deep and lasting understanding rather than superficial procedural knowledge. The curriculum is sequenced carefully to ensure that foundational knowledge is secure before progressing, supporting pupils to achieve automaticity in key facts and methods, which is essential for tackling more complex problems confidently.
The use of White Rose Maths supports a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) methodology. CPA methods provide multiple entry points to learning and enable pupils to internalise mathematical concepts through hands-on experiences and visual representations before moving to abstract reasoning. This approach reduces cognitive overload and frustration, increasing pupil confidence and motivation.
Furthermore, White Rose Maths offers streamlined planning that focuses on adaptive teaching and formative assessment. The curriculum’s flexibility enables teachers to identify and close knowledge gaps systematically, ensuring all pupils can progress effectively without misconceptions. This is particularly important given our focus on improving fluency in maths, enabling pupils to recall facts automatically, apply procedures flexibly, and adapt strategies in problem-solving—skills that underpin success in a rapidly changing world.
Whole School Aims
The maths curriculum directly supports our vision to provide a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment where children are respected and encouraged to develop self-motivation, critical thinking, and independence. By fostering fluency and reasoning in maths, we nurture pupils’ ability to meet academic challenges confidently and prepare them to be valued citizens who can navigate complex problems both within and beyond school.
Subject Vision
We teach maths at Beaconside because it is fundamental to pupils’ academic success and personal development. Our intent is for every pupil to develop a secure, deep understanding of mathematical concepts, enabling them to apply knowledge fluently, reason logically, and solve problems creatively and independently.
Our vision is that pupils leave Beaconside equipped not only with the mathematical skills necessary for the next stage of their education but also with a positive attitude towards maths, resilience in problem-solving, and the ability to communicate their mathematical thinking clearly. This aspiration reflects our broader school vision of developing self-motivated, self-critical young people who contribute positively to society.
