Computing
At Beaconside Primary and Nursery School, our Computing curriculum is carefully designed to provide a comprehensive, progressive, and inclusive learning experience that fully meets the requirements of the National Curriculum for Computing from EYFS to Year 6. We have chosen the iCompute scheme of work because it offers a structured, accessible, and engaging approach to computing education.
The iCompute curriculum ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum’s aims to develop pupils’ understanding of computer science principles, information technology skills, and digital literacy. It systematically builds computational thinking skills such as decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition, and algorithm design, which are essential for problem-solving across all subjects and real-life contexts. The curriculum blends “unplugged” activities with hands-on coding and digital tasks, allowing pupils to grasp abstract concepts through practical, collaborative learning experiences.
This provides learning opportunities and flexible digital resources that can be adapted to meet varied needs. The digital nature of the resources, with constant updates and AI integration, ensures our teaching remains current with technological advances, preparing pupils for future educational and workplace demands.
The curriculum is aspirational, aiming not only to equip pupils with technical skills and digital literacy but also to foster creativity, independence, and resilience. It supports our pupils in becoming confident, self-motivated learners who can navigate and contribute positively to a rapidly changing digital world. The focus on mastery and progression ensures that pupils build deep, long-term understanding and fluency, reducing cognitive overload, which aligns with our priority to support pupils’ well-being and self-esteem.
In summary, the iCompute curriculum supports our ambition to provide a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment where pupils gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to meet future challenges, in line with the National Curriculum and our school’s values.
