Reception

Welcome to Reception

Class Teacher: Mrs Katie Coleby
TAs: Miss Katie Richards and Mrs Patricia Taylor
Our Foundation Stage is an exciting, safe and stimulating environment where children are both nurtured and supported to reach their full potential!
Intent
Our EYFS curriculum is designed to give every child the best possible start in life, enabling them to become confident, curious, and independent learners who are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.
We recognise that every child is unique and develops at their own pace. Our curriculum nurtures the whole child — supporting their personal, social and emotional development (PSED), promoting communication and language, and laying strong foundations for lifelong learning.
Through Quality First Teaching and the Characteristics of Effective Learning — playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically — we provide a rich, inclusive environment where children are motivated to explore, question, and succeed.
Our curriculum aims to:
  • Build secure, trusting relationships that allow children to feel safe, valued, and ready to explore.
  • Promote emotional literacy and resilience, helping children to understand and manage their feelings and develop positive relationships with others.
  • Foster a love of language, extending children’s vocabulary through meaningful talk, stories, rhymes, and real-life experiences.
  • Encourage independence, curiosity, and creativity, supporting children to take risks and make connections in their learning.
  • Celebrate diversity and individuality, teaching children to respect themselves and others and to develop a sense of belonging within their community.
  • Provide a rich, language-filled environment that develops early skills in communication, literacy, mathematics, and understanding the world.
  • Prepare children for life by instilling key values such as kindness, perseverance, respect, and cooperation.
Our intent is that all children leave the EYFS as confident communicators, kind friends, and enthusiastic learners who are ready to thrive in the wider world.
Implementation
Our EYFS curriculum is delivered through a balance of child-initiated play, adult-guided learning, and high-quality interactions. Practitioners create a nurturing, language-rich environment where every child can develop curiosity, confidence, and independence.
We place a strong emphasis on communication and language, modelling and extending vocabulary through stories, songs, conversations, and meaningful play. PSED is at the heart of our practice — children learn to recognise and manage emotions, build positive relationships, and develop resilience and empathy.
Learning takes place both indoors and outdoors through purposeful play and real-life experiences that spark imagination and prepare children for life. Planning is responsive to children’s interests, supported by ongoing observations and assessments that guide next steps.
We work closely with families to ensure consistency, inclusion, and a shared understanding.

Impact
Our curriculum enables children to become confident, capable, and caring learners who are ready for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.
Through our focus on communication, language, and PSED, children develop strong emotional awareness, resilience, and the ability to express themselves clearly. They show curiosity, independence, and enjoyment in their learning.
Progress is carefully monitored through regular observation and assessment, ensuring that every child receives the support and challenge they need to succeed. By the end of the EYFS, children are well prepared for transition to Year 1 — secure in their personal development, with a rich vocabulary, positive attitudes to learning, and a strong sense of self and belonging.
